High Tea vs. Afternoon Tea: What’s the Difference? (And Where to Sip in Baltimore)

If you’ve been searching for high tea in Baltimore or looking to host the perfect tea party in Baltimore, you’ve likely noticed that terms like “high tea” and “afternoon tea” are often used interchangeably. However, historically and culinary-wise, they are quite different!

At Wight Tea Co., we get a lot of questions about where to find these experiences. While we don't have a physical tea room or offer formal "high tea" services ourselves, we are the experts on the most important ingredient: the tea.

Here is everything you need to know about tea traditions and where to find the best steeped experiences in Charm City.

High Tea vs. Afternoon Tea: Setting the Record Straight

The confusion usually stems from the word "High." Many people assume "High Tea" means "Fancy Tea," but the names actually refer to the height of the tables used!

Afternoon Tea (The Fancy One)

Often called "Low Tea," this tradition began in the 1840s with the Duchess of Bedford. It was a social bridge between lunch and a late dinner.

The Vibe: Elegant, dainty, and social.

The Table: Served on low, comfortable parlor tables or coffee tables.

The Menu: Crustless finger sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and jam, and delicate pastries.

When: Mid-afternoon (usually between 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM).

High Tea (The Hearty One)

Historically, High Tea was a working-class meal. After a long day of labor, workers would return home for a "high" meal at the dining table.

The Vibe: Practical and filling.

The Table: Served at a "high" dining table.

The Menu: Heavier savory dishes like meat pies, bread, cheese, and even potatoes.

When: Early evening (5:00 PM to 7:00 PM).
